History

  1. Teaching  English Language,  Literature and Communication Skills as a Compulsory/ Foundation Course since the inception of the institution in 1985

  2. Since it is Compulsory, all the students of the college are the students of Dept. of English 

 

Objectives

  1. Providing conducive climate to the learners of English

  2. Training the students in Written and Spoken Communication  

  3. Delivering personal care and support to groom young talents who can communicate and express themselves in English

  4. Initiating Interactive Teaching in Classroom to enhance their communicative competence  

Dell/Scope

  • The Dept. has Digital Education and Language Lab (DELL) since 2009

  • The courses of SCOPE (Society for the Creation of Opportunity through Proficiency in English) are run in the lab. It is the only exam centre in the district. The students from the other colleges of the district are allotted centre in our college by SCOPE which imparts international certification of Cambridge-ESOL.

  • Around 400 to 500 students register for SCOPE courses every year 

 

Development Activities

    1. We have a Language Lab for SCOPE with 25 computers and a server with LAN connection to enhance the level of English for better professional growth of students

    2. We have initiated a practice of taking e-assignments to save paper and hence the environment as well as time

    3. We would like to start on-line tests for English Language & Communication in near future, so that the evaluation  can be done instantly

    4. We plan to conduct courses in German/French/Russian   Language &  Soft Skill Development course/workshop in  vacation/ holidays for the better interpersonal development of youth regarding advanced communication skills, personal effectiveness, time/stress management, goal setting and self-confidence

 

Dr. Kalika Shah

Qualification:-

  1. Ph.D on Multiculturalism and Politics of Identity with reference to the novels of Bapsi Sidhwa, Rohinton Mistry and Boman Desai, i.e. Parsee Diaspora Fiction.

  2. M.Phil in Comparative Study of the novels of Thomas Hardy and Pannalal Patel. 

  3. M.A. in English and Sanskrit, First Class.

  4. B.A. in English and Sanskrit, Goldmedalist.

  5. Stood 4th in the Higher Secondary Education Board and 1st in Surat Center

Work Experience:-
  1. Associate Professor and Head in English Department for last 16 years at Narmada College of Science and Commerce at Bharuch, affiliated to VNSGU. 

  2. Worked with M S University, Vadodara for four years in the mid 90s and prior to it with SNDT’s Home Science College, Surat and J. S. M. College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Alibaug.

Other Activities And Interests:-
  1. Associated with the cultural and debate committees of the student council in the college.

  2. Co-ordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in the college working for NAAC accreditation.

  3. Co-ordinator of SCOPE centres in Digital Education and Language Lab of the college.

  4. Areas of interest are comparative studies, translation, diaspora studies and reading Indian English as well as Gujarati literature.

  5. Other hobbies are travelling, music, garba and enhancing the culinary skill.  

  6. Attended a number of National/International Seminars, Conferences and Workshops

  7. Published a number of Research Papers in recognised journals and articles in books

  8. Done a number of Translations.

 

Other Faculty Members In The Department Of English

The Department of English caters to the requirement of the grant in aid and the self financed courses of the college. The college management has provided faculty from time to time on temporary basis to teach the students for every academic year.
